Preparing for Norway : the AutoPASS

Categories Norway, Uncategorized

We are leaving for Norway in a couple of days and if you are planning to go there as a tourist just know that you have to pay toll on their highways. If you are planning for a roadtrip (and do lots of kilometers) you might consider an Autopass. It’s a device that helps you pass the tollbooths without paying with a credit card or cash. It’s a device that is linked to your online AutoPASS-account so that you can get billed later on (or it is deducted of your upfront paid balance). It’s quite easy to get and I would recommend it. The big bonus is for environment friendly cars (100% electric for example) : they drive for free on Norwegian roads BUT… you need the Autopass. The procedure is very easy and explained here : http://www.autopass.no/en/autopass . In short :

  1. Sign an agreement with a toll road operator : pick one here : http://www.autopass.no/en/order-tag . It doesn’t matter which one. I went on with http://www.en.bomringenbergen.no/ and the process was quite easy.
  2. Register your car
  3. You will receive an invoice to pay 2000 Krones (+:- 200 €) : this will be your “balance”, don’t worry, what you don’t use you will get back later when you send the AutoPASS back. For electric vehicles the invoice will only be 200 Krones (the deposit for the Autopass itself). Maybe a small sidenote : for electric vehicles you will have to send an electronic copy of your local registration papers and the Certificate of Conformity to the toll road operator.
  4. After you pay you will receive your Autopass by mail.

below you can see a small unboxing video of the Autopass

You should place the AutoPASS somewhere on the windshield but for those who drive a Tesla Model S, I found this very helpfull video that shows you how you can discretely place it under the dashboard of you Model S.

Happy driving in Norway :-).
